We went to Greve in Chianti today. Greve is the principal
town in the Chianti wine district which stretches from south of Florence to
just north of Siena.
All around Greve you can see the famous black rooster
Chianti Classico symbol.
Here's the reason Chianti has a black rooster symbol.
In the square there’s a statue of Greve’s most famous son, Giovanni
da Verrazzano, the first European to explore the Atlantic coast between Florida and New Brunswick in Canada, including New York bay. One
of the landmarks that now bears his name is the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge across
the the opening of New York harbour which links Brooklyn and Staten Island.
The shops have many souvenirs bearing the black rooster
Chianti symbol. But the strangest thing I found in a shop was this model vehicle:
